Lectures: “From Housekeeping to Volcanoes: Sarah Stickney Ellis on Female Education”

The Feminist Research Institute invites you to a lecture:

“From Housekeeping to Volcanoes: Sarah Stickney Ellis on Female
Education”

Ashley Carlson
Tuesday, Feb 9th 12:30-1:30 p.m.
SUB Cherry/Silver

Ashley Carlson’s presentation is drawn from the first chapter of her dissertation on Ellis. She argues that the 19th-century American author, Sarah Stickney Ellis, was much more complex than most 20th-century critics have acknowledged. Generally remembered only as an antifeminist conduct manual author, Ellis, who wrote over 30 works of fiction on top of her series of four popular conduct manuals, was very much aware of Victorian women's issues, and sought to offer women practical and often very liberal advice on how to live happy and productive lives.
