Two of our PhD students received 1st and 2nd place in the Medieval Association of the Pacific (MAP) Founders Prize competition for best papers presented by graduate students at the 2009 MAP conference:
Francesca Tuoni was awarded 1st place ($500) for her paper "The Lexical Influence of Arabic on Middle English with an Emphasis on the Vocabulary of Silk"
Doug VanBenthuysen was awarded 3rd place ($250) for his paper "Beowulf 1553b: A Controversial Period"
UNM actually swept the podium, as Linguistics graduate student Shelece Easterday won 2nd place ($250) for her paper "Handling the Hoard: The Treatment of Treasure in Beowulf"
